Jack Darling Park Is Where the Lakeshore Tunnel Begins, and the Murals Mark Its Route

  • November 5, 2026

"Overnight work will primarily involve tunnelling operations. These activities will generate lower noise levels than typical above-ground daytime construction." Peel Region officials wrote that in a project notice that INsauga reported in July, on the day the tunnelling started at Jack Darling Memorial Park.

Most of what's being built on Lakeshore Road West is underground and out of sight. The fence on the Jack Darling boulevard is the starting point of a sewer tunnel that runs east toward Port Credit. Above ground, the only line connecting one work site to the next is a series of murals painted on the hoardings. Read them in order and they trace the tunnel's route.

What Sits Behind the Hoarding

Peel Region's Lakeshore Trunk Sewer and Watermain Project, officially Project 19-2215, puts a new large sanitary sewer and a new watermain under Lakeshore Road from Jack Darling Memorial Park in the west to Elmwood Avenue in the east. Work began in October 2025. The sewer pipe is 2,400 mm across and the watermain is 750 mm.

According to Peel's June 2026 newsletter, crews at Jack Darling dug a shaft about 45 metres down. The shaft at Richards Memorial Park, a little farther east along Lakeshore, goes down 34 metres. INsauga reported that the tunnel boring machine started working east from the Jack Darling shaft on July 20, 2026, with roughly four kilometres to cover underground.

That explains the night work. The City of Mississauga gave the project a noise bylaw exemption so tunnelling can run from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., and Peel expects the below-ground work to continue until summer 2028.

Seven Pumping Stations, One Pipe

The new pipe is a gravity sewer. It replaces seven old pumping stations along this stretch, which Peel says will lower long-term operating and maintenance costs. Peel's newsletter also lists other goals: capacity for new homes and businesses in South Peel, smoother flow, fewer service interruptions, and pipes that are less likely to fail in storms.

The watermain goes in a different way. Peel describes the watermain work as "open cut" construction, meaning crews dig a trench, lay the pipe and fill it back in. Drivers on Lakeshore feel that open-cut work much more than the tunnel.

What Changes on Lakeshore This Month

The tunnel has little effect on traffic. The watermain trench is what narrows the road. Peel's September 15, 2026 notice lists these dates:

  • October 1 to the end of November 2026: Lakeshore Road West is down to one lane in each direction from Jack Darling Park to Lorne Park Road.
  • No street parking inside the work area on Lakeshore. Access to homes stays open.
  • After that, the lane reductions move east in zones. Peel expects reductions somewhere on Lakeshore between Jack Darling and Shawnmarr Road from October 2026 to summer 2028.

Peel calls these dates approximate and says weather or unforeseen conditions can move them. Its most recent update, dated October 15, 2026, shows a schedule change. Unforeseen utility impacts led Peel to temporarily reopen Wesley Avenue at Lakeshore Road West. Peel says it will notify the neighbourhood before it closes the intersection again and rebuilds the work site there. Peel sends these notices by email to anyone who signs up on the project page.

The Jack Darling compound is staying a long time. Peel's project page gives the boulevard compound a window from as early as November 10, 2025 to late 2029. The Lakeshore Road West Trail is detoured around it for that whole period. Peel also says the park's leash-free areas will see further impacts, with details and timing to come in later updates. The City's park page lists two leash-free zones and five parking lots at 1180 Lakeshore Road West. If you go there with a dog most mornings, keep an eye on Peel's notices this winter. Peel Public Health has also finished beach water testing for the 2026 season.

The Murals Mark the Route

The project's most visible part above ground is art. Peel worked with the Mississauga Arts Council to put local artwork on the construction walls. The council's Lakeshore Mural Project assigns one artist to each construction site. Since the sites are where the tunnel goes in and comes out, the murals follow the pipe's route above ground.

The first one is in Lorne Park. Peel scheduled the unveiling of Nyle Miigizi Johnston's mural at the Jack Darling site for December 5, 2025, as the project's first. These are the sites and artists the Arts Council lists:

  1. Jack Darling Memorial Park: Nyle Miigizi Johnston, "Mino-nawae-indawaewin / Living in Harmony," about balance, respect and interconnection with creation.
  2. Richard's Memorial Park: Sauga City, a red fox through Ontario's seasons with local flora and fauna.
  3. Pine Avenue: Jinke Wang, "Port Credit Long Bench," a diverse community sharing a bench on the waterfront.
  4. Wesley Avenue: Soon Cho, three murals of Port Credit's shops, music, lighthouse, Lake Ontario and biodiversity, featuring the artist's character Niña.
  5. 5A and 5B Front Street: Keitha Keeshig-Tobias Biizindam, mixed-media and beadwork images bringing together Anishinaabe perspectives, plant knowledge, woodland animals and berry ceremony.
  6. Elmwood Avenue: Marlon Porter, "Tributary," showing the Credit River's landscapes and honouring the people who preserve local history and access to the water.

The first two murals are close to home for Lorne Park. Jack Darling and Richards Memorial are both on the Lakeshore Road West Trail, and Peel has rerouted the trail around both compounds, so the detour takes you right past the hoardings. Richards Memorial is also the next shaft on the tunnel's path east, and its compound has a shorter timeline than Jack Darling's. Peel gives it December 2025 to fall 2027.

Walking It From the Lorne Park End

A walk that starts at Jack Darling heads in the same direction as the boring machine. Past Richards Memorial, the remaining sites run toward and into Port Credit. Several of them have taken over public parking. Peel has closed the lot at Wesley Avenue and Lakeshore Road West from August 17, 2026 to spring 2028, though the sidewalk around it stays open. The lot at Elmwood Avenue North and Lakeshore Road East is closed from May 11, 2026 to fall 2028. On the east side of Front Street North, Marina Park, its parking lot and the sidewalk are closed from January 2026 to summer 2028. If you're heading to the eastern murals, it's easier to start from Jack Darling's own lots or go on foot.

These hoardings won't stay up forever. Each one comes down when its compound closes, and the end dates are spread out: Richards Memorial in fall 2027, the Port Credit sites through 2028, and Jack Darling in late 2029. Jack Darling's mural, the one closest to most Lorne Park homes, is set to be the last one standing, on a fence that will be there for years.

If you're planning to buy, sell or renovate in Lorne Park, a construction window that runs to 2028 or 2029 is part of the timing.
